A Step-by-Step Guide to Receiving Your EV Incentive

Before applying for Charge Up New Jersey, you must confirm your eligibility for the program. You may qualify for one of two EV incentives: Charge Up ($2,000) or Charge Up+ ($4,000).

  • To qualify for the $2,000 incentive, you must be a New Jersey resident with a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
  • To qualify for the $4,000 incentive, you must meet additional income requirements

Charge Up+ Application Process

If you meet the income requirements for the Charge Up+ incentive, you will need to apply through the online portal prior to ordering, purchasing or leasing an eligible electric vehicle.

Follow these steps:

  1. Gather all required documents

    You will be required to provide the following information:

    • Your New Jersey driver’s license AND
    • Your most recent tax filing OR
    • Proof of enrollment in an eligible public assistance program.
  2. Create an account in the online portal.
    Applications can only be submitted through the online portal. You will receive notifications about your application using the email you create your account with. The application will take 5-10 minutes to complete, and you can save your progress at any time.

  3. Obtain your prequalification ID.
    Applications will be processed in the order they are received. You will be notified of whether your application has been accepted in about 5 business days from when you submit it. If successful, you will receive a unique prequalification identification number.

  4. Bring your prequalification ID to a participating dealership.
    Once you receive your prequalification ID, take it to any eligible dealership or showroom. You can then apply your $4,000 incentive directly at the point of sale when you purchase or lease an eligible EV.

Charge Up Application Process

If you are applying for the $2,000 Charge Up incentive, you do not need to complete an online application. Follow these steps to claim your incentive:

  1. Find an eligible EV. 
    Incentives are available for more than 30 EV models.

  2. Find an eligible dealership or showroom. 
    Choose from over 300 participating dealerships and showrooms.

  3. Purchase or lease your new EV. 
    Simply visit the dealership or showroom of your choice and your $2,000 incentive will be applied directly at the point of sale.

EV Charger Incentive Application Process

To apply for the EV charger incentive, follow these steps:

  1. Gather all required documents.

    You will be required to provide the following information in your application:

    • Proof of purchase of a Level 2 smart charger.
    • A scanned photo of the serial number on the charging equipment.
    • Copy of New Jersey driver’s license as proof of residence and a unique identifier.
    • Valid NJ EV registration showing a residential address in New Jersey.
  2. Create an account in the online portal. 
    Applications can only be submitted through the online portal. You will receive notifications about your application using the email you create your account with.
  3. Upload and submit your supporting documents.
    The application will take 5-10 minutes to complete, and you can save your progress at any time. 
    Once submitted, you will receive notice of whether your application has been accepted in approximately 14 business days.
  4. Receive your incentive! 
    You can expect your incentive check to be mailed within 30 days of your application’s approval.
